Melbourne Food & Wine Crawl and Bite Southside is a program of ‘progressive dinners and moveable feasts’. It’s based on the successful Melbourne Food & Wine Festival event series of the same name.
Stop for a one-course and one-drink introduction across three venues over one night and discover the thriving dining scene along Carlisle Street, from East St Kilda to Balaclava.
Makrut lime-cured kingfish. Prawn in betel leaf with sai-oa chicken sausage. Wagyu, chilli, basil and fried quail egg. That’s just the beginning at contemporary regional Thai diner Charlong, stop one on the Carlisle Street Crawl.
We’ll have that and more with a glass of Rob Dolan pinot gris, before food writer Dani Valent points us towards Latin-inspired gluten-free hotspot Rufio, where we’ll sit down to a braised beef cachapa – a savoury pancake of Venezuelan provenance – and, if you don’t mind, a frozen passionfruit Margarita.
And it wouldn’t be a Carlisle Street Crawl if it didn’t call at Moonhouse, our final stop, where we’ll tie a bow on a rollicking flavour ride with chicken and prawn wonton with black vinegar, spiced braised duck spring rolls and char siu pork buns; a cocktail, too.
